CHAPTER 08 · AI IN PRACTICE

AI in finance and insurance

AI is used to assess risk, detect fraud and help with paperwork.

What is it?

Banks and insurers use AI to assess risk, detect fraud, process documents and help customers. Decisions about loans or insurance directly affect people’s lives, so strict rules apply.

An everyday example

Because of an unusual purchase abroad, your bank temporarily blocks your card and sends you a message to confirm.

Why does it matter?

An error or bias in a financial model can unfairly deny someone a loan or raise a premium. People have a right to an explanation.

A common misconception

That a chatbot’s financial advice is reliable. Do not make money decisions on the basis of one unchecked answer.

In more detail

Where can it help?

In spotting unusual transactions, analysing patterns and supporting customers.

Why is it sensitive?

Because a decision can affect access to money, insurance or other important services.

Is accuracy enough?

No. Fairness, explainability, privacy and the right to challenge a decision matter too.

Is AI an investment adviser?

A generic answer from a model is not reliable personal financial advice and may contain wrong information.

Remember: When money is involved, do not decide on the strength of one unchecked answer.
