What is generative AI?
Generative AI creates new outputs, such as text, images, speech, code or video.
What is it?
Generative AI creates new outputs: text, images, speech, code or video. It learns patterns from large numbers of examples and then puts together something similar to them, though not necessarily a literal copy. Chatbots are only one form of it.
An everyday example
When a chatbot drafts a birthday invitation or an app draws a logo from a description, that is generative AI at work.
Why does it matter?
Within a few years generative AI has reached schools, offices and newsrooms. It brings speed, but also new questions about truth, authorship and misuse.
A common misconception
That what it creates is also true. A made-up illustration can be excellent; a made-up quote or court ruling is a serious error.
In more detail
What does “generate” mean?
From data and instructions, it creates a new sequence of characters, sound patterns or image elements.
Is it just copying?
It often creates new combinations, but in some cases it can reproduce parts of its training data or very similar content. Copyright questions remain important.
Is it always a chatbot?
No. There are models for images, sound, video, 3D shapes and scientific structures.
Is the result true?
Whether truth matters depends on the task. An invented illustration can be a good result; an invented court ruling is a serious error.
Remember: Creative and true are two different qualities.
